Antonio Rudiger set for 'more minutes' as Germany keep Ecuador World Cup changes limited

Antonio Rudiger set for 'more minutes' as Germany keep Ecuador World Cup changes limited

Germany have already booked their place in the knockout stages after winning their opening matches, but they will face a determined Ecuador side at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Thursday, with their opponents still searching for their first victory of the tournament.

Rudiger is expected to step into a bigger role after replacing the injured Nico Schlotterbeck during Germany's 2-1 comeback win over Ivory Coast. Schlotterbeck has been ruled out of the World Cup with an ankle injury, leaving Nagelsmann with fewer defensive options.

The Real Madrid defender has also overcome a knee issue following surgery a year ago, and Nagelsmann believes he is ready to contribute more as Germany continue their World Cup campaign.

"His knee does not bother him right now, he feels very good," Nagelsmann said. "I think he did a great job when he came into the match last time and he will do the same tomorrow. We hope Antonio is rewarded with more match time."

The four-time world champions are aiming to continue their strong tournament after failing to reach the knockout stages in their previous two World Cup appearances. However, Nagelsmann has indicated he does not want to make too many changes to a side that has shown improvement and consistency.

That could mean Deniz Undav will once again start on the bench, although the Stuttgart forward has proved his value as an impact substitute. Undav scored twice after coming on during Germany's 2-1 win over Ivory Coast and remains happy to contribute in any role.

"If it was not okay for me to start on the bench, I would not be here at this press conference," Undav said.

"I will try to give my best input whether I am in the starting lineup or later. I joined from the bench twice and we won the game, and I am very happy about that. The most important thing is that we win the match."
