Arsenal confirm William Saliba to miss 'extended period' with back injury

The 25-year-old centre-back returned to London after being forced off just 30 minutes into France's semi-final defeat to Spain. He subsequently missed Les Bleus' bronze-medal match against England before undergoing specialist assessments with Arsenal.

Those examinations concluded that surgery was not necessary, with the club instead opting for a managed rehabilitation programme.

In a statement, Arsenal said: "William Saliba has returned to us from World Cup duty, where he played an integral role in France reaching the semi-finals of the competition.

"Subsequent specialist reviews on William's return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation.

"Extensive assessments have concluded that surgery is not recommended, but William should now commence a managed recovery programme.

"William's rehabilitation will commence immediately, with continual management of his injury, and he is expected to be out of action for an extended period.

"Everyone is fully focused on supporting William to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible."

Saliba had been carrying the injury for several weeks before the World Cup and admitted during the tournament that he had been playing through discomfort.

"I've had some minor niggles for several months," he said. "I've been gritting my teeth because there was the Champions League and the Premier League.

"The World Cup comes round only once every four years, so you've got to grit your teeth."

Despite concerns he could miss the tournament altogether, Saliba started four matches as France reached the semi-finals before the injury forced him off against Spain.

The setback is a significant blow for Mikel Arteta's side ahead of the new campaign. Saliba was a cornerstone of the Arsenal defence last season, making 50 appearances in all competitions as the Gunners ended their 22-year wait for the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final.

Arsenal face Manchester City in the Community Shield on 16 August before beginning the defence of their Premier League crown at home to promoted Coventry City five days later.
