Brilliant Bangladesh make history with first Test win in Australia

The comprehensive victory comes nine years after the Tigers first beat Australia in Bangladesh, but 23 years after they first played Test cricket Down Under.

And the visitors celebrated plenty of milestones along the way. Seamer Hasan Mahmud boasted career-best match figures of 9/111, Tanzid Hasan chalked up his maiden century in just his second Test and Mehidy Hasan Miraz contributed with a half-century and five wickets in the second innings.

Australia resumed the match at 161/4 - still 67 runs short of Bangladesh's total - on Sunday morning in front of a nearly empty Marrara Oval. 17 runs later, Alex Carey played Mehidy down the wrong line to be caught behind for 30. Then Mehidy cleaned up Beau Webster (5) with a ripper and drew an edge from captain Pat Cummins' (8) bat.

Taskin Ahmed got Mitchell Starc after lunch to reduce Australia to 250/7. All the while, Cameron Green had been batting superbly and reached his third Test century to a modicum of applause.

Mahmud finally dismissed Green when he got the ball to nip back and stay low, taking the inside edge to cue the death rattle. When the tenth wicket finally fell, Bangladesh needed just 57 runs to make history.

Australia got one wicket through Josh Hazlewood in the second over, but Shadman Islam and Monimul Haque were there at the end, with the latter hitting the winning runs to wild celebrations from the small Bangladesh contingent in the crowd.

The second Test begins in Mackay on 22 August. Bangladesh will be eyeing more history as they have never beaten Australia in a Test series, and to do it in their own backyard would be outstanding.
