Captain Aiden Markram hails Proteas win over New Zealand

Markram led from the front with an unbeaten 86 off 44 balls as the Proteas chased down 176 to finish on 178/3, after restricting New Zealand to 175/7. The innings, featuring eight fours and four sixes, anchored a confident run chase that ensured South Africa secured their third straight victory in the group stage.

"We were definitely a lot closer to the fullest of potential tonight," Markram said. "I thought pretty much all areas were really good. It just came from clarity and conviction in that plan… It's nice to see the boys slowly but surely improving."

Markram also praised Marco Jansen, who claimed 4/40 to help limit New Zealand's total and break key partnerships during crucial phases of the innings.

"He is a very different left arm… To take four poles for us tonight and keep breaking partnerships for us throughout the middle there and towards the back end is really important," Markram said, adding that the seamer's variation and height give South Africa a unique advantage.

The skipper further highlighted the team's aggressive batting intent, particularly their willingness to attack during the Powerplay as they look to maximise a deep and experienced batting order.

"Ultimately, it's trying to get the team off to good starts. There's a lot of power in the batting line-up and it's about managing it through the right phases," he said. "That's not always going to come off, but when it does, we feel like we get ahead of the game."

Markram admitted that while dramatic wins - such as their recent double Super Over victory against Afghanistan - can lift morale, more controlled performances offer greater consistency and ease the mental pressure on the squad.
