CSA director backs under-fire Proteas white-ball coach Rob Walter to stay on

Walter's Proteas team was eliminated by New Zealand in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy on Wednesday, after also making it to the semi-finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Despite this, his record in 24 ODIs in bilateral series stands at 50% wins.

While some CSA officials are reportedly doubtful about Walter's continued role, Nkwe assured that Walter has his full support.

"We need to empower him. The priority is to ensure that we appoint a full-time batting coach and a full-time bowling coach," said Nkwe.

He emphasized that the CSA would review the Proteas' recent performances in ICC event playoffs, such as their defeat to India in last year's T20 World Cup final, and assess the lack of form from some of their key players.

"Of course, this starts with the individual players, and we will have discussions with them about that, but it also extends to the management and the system as a whole," Nkwe added.

Nkwe also stated that Walter would have more consistent access to senior players for ODIs as South Africa prepares for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which they will co-host, while continuing to offer opportunities to emerging players.

"We will focus on creating more stability and providing clarity to those players who are strong candidates for selection in 2027 over the next 24 to 30 months," Nkwe concluded.
