David Hancko bolsters Atletico Madrid's backline in dramatic transfer coup

The 27-year-old, a long-time target for the Spanish side, has finally fulfilled his ambition to play under Diego Simeone, signing a long-term contract with the club at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The transfer saga took a cinematic turn, with Atletico swooping in after Hancko's proposed move to Al Nassr collapsed unexpectedly.

The deal, finalized for a reported 30 million euros including add-ons, strengthens a defence that has bid farewell to veterans César Azpilicueta and Axel Witsel this season. Atletico's persistence paid off, having failed to agree terms with Feyenoord for Hancko last summer despite making him their top defensive target.

"David Hancko brings versatility and quality to our squad," Diego Simeone said. "He's proven himself in the Eredivisie, and his ability to adapt to multiple roles will be crucial for us."

Hancko's arrival adds depth and flexibility, as the Slovakian can operate as both a centre-back and a left-back, seamlessly fitting into various tactical setups. His aerial prowess and knack for scoring from set pieces, boasting 15 goals in three seasons at Feyenoord, make him a formidable addition.

The player's determination to join Atletico proved pivotal in sealing the deal swiftly. "I've always dreamed of playing for a club like Atletico Madrid," Hancko said in a recent interview.

"This is a massive opportunity, and I'm ready to give everything for the team." His decision to prioritize a move to La Liga over less competitive leagues underscores his ambition.

With Hancko now in the fold, Atletico Madrid have sent a clear message: they are building a robust squad to compete on all fronts. The Slovakian's blend of defensive solidity and attacking threat could prove a masterstroke for the rojiblancos.
