David Hancko's Atletico Madrid dream comes true after transfer drama

In an interview with flashscore.es, the 28-year-old centre-back opened up about his move to the Wanda Metropolitano and a near transfer to Al-Nassr.

"My first impressions are fantastic. Signing for Atletico was my dream for the last year and a half," Hancko said. "Five years ago, I was struggling with knee issues at Sparta Prague, not even a starter. To be here now is a dream come true."

Despite a complex transfer process, Hancko's commitment never wavered. "It was never about choosing between multiple offers, as some suggested," he explained. "I'm proud to be here and focused on settling in, ensuring my family is happy, and repaying the club with strong performances."

Hancko has been warmly welcomed by his teammates. "I felt like a kid from Slovakia at first, but they see me as experienced," he said. "I've played Champions League football, captained Feyenoord, and have over 50 caps for Slovakia. The squad's young, so I'm a bit of a veteran."

A challenging pre-season tested his patience. "I have a five-year contract; it's a marathon," he noted. "If I don't start immediately, I'll use the time to adapt and gel with the team."

Hancko aims to lead Atletico's defence. "The last three years have taught me so much," he said. "I want to earn respect through hard work and leadership, like I did at Feyenoord."

Praising Diego Simeone, Hancko added: "He has an aura, players listen when he speaks. After our first game, he spoke to me for 15 minutes, showing he cares. His style mixes Spanish flair with Dutch elements I know well."

On a near move to Al-Nassr, Hancko revealed: "They agreed a deal with Feyenoord, but no other offers came. I wanted to stay in Europe, but it seemed impossible. When things stalled with Al-Nassr, Atletico acted fast, sorting it in a day and a half. It felt like fate."

Atletico's X account posted on 10 August: "Welcome, David Hancko! Ready to fight for the red and white! #Atleti". Hancko shared: "A dream come true to join @AtleticoMadrid . Can't wait to give everything! #AupaAtleti".
