Dortmund star Bensebaini left out of Algeria preliminary World Cup squad

Dortmund star Bensebaini left out of Algeria preliminary World Cup squad

The 31-year-old suffered a foot injury in a 4-0 Bundesliga victory against Freiburg in late April, which has subsequently seen him being ruled out for the rest of BVB's season.

Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac had stated that the versatile defender's Bundesliga campaign had come to an end but opened the door towards him recovering in time to help Les Fennecs at the World Cup.

"Ramy isn't doing well, he's still experiencing pain in his foot, said Kovak to reporters at a press conference.

"I don't think he'll play against Bremen either. His Bundesliga season is probably over, even if he could return for the World Cup."

According to tournament rules, participating nations have until June 1 to submit their final squad list, which means Bensebaini could still be included in the team to travel to North America.

He has 81 international caps with Algeria, scoring seven goals.
