Eddie Howe slams 'unforgivable' collapse as Newcastle crushed in Barcelona

The Newcastle head coach cut a frustrated figure after watching his team unravel at the Nou Camp on Wednesday night, admitting defensive mistakes proved costly. "Our performance dropped - that was very clear," Howe said. "The first four goals you can't concede. Two set-plays is unforgivable to a degree."

Despite the heavy scoreline, Newcastle started brightly and showed real intent in the first half. Anthony Elanga struck twice, finishing off moves created by Lewis Hall and Harvey Barnes, as the visitors briefly matched Barcelona's intensity.

"I thought in the first half we were excellent - we went toe-to-toe with them," Howe said. "We created chances and looked a real threat. But we didn't defend key moments well enough, and there were individual errors."

Barcelona punished those lapses ruthlessly. Raphinha opened the scoring early, before Marc Bernal restored the lead from a free-kick. A late first-half penalty from Lamine Yamal shifted the momentum firmly in the hosts' favour.

Howe admitted his players never recovered from that blow. "Psychologically, we did not recover from the penalty incident at half-time," he said. "There was certainly a dip in our performance."

The second half turned into a one-sided display. Fermin Lopez, Robert Lewandowski - with two goals - and Raphinha added further strikes as Barcelona capitalised on every mistake, including a costly error at the back that gifted the Brazilian his second.

"They're a world-class side and they punished every single mistake," Howe admitted. "It feels harsh given how much we put into the opening period, but they deserved to go through."

The defeat ends Newcastle's unbeaten European run and leaves Howe facing a crucial final stretch in the Premier League to secure a return to continental football. With a fierce derby against Sunderland looming, the challenge now is to lift his squad quickly after what he described as a painful lesson at the highest level.
