'I tried, I tried. Now it's over' - Neymar signals end of Brazil career

The 34-year-old forward made the comments after Santos secured a 4-2 Copa Sudamericana victory over Venezuela's Universidad Central on Tuesday, reinforcing the message he delivered following Brazil's last-16 defeat to Norway earlier this month.

Brazil's all-time leading scorer said he was proud of everything he achieved with the national team but felt the time had come to step away.

"I think my time with the national team has already passed. I made history there, and I'm very happy about it. I experienced a lot there, gave my blood and my life, and always fought and battled for the yellow jersey. But I don't think I want it anymore," Neymar said.

His latest comments follow Brazil's 2-1 defeat to Norway on July 5, a result that saw the five-time world champions suffer their earliest FIFA World Cup elimination since 1990.

Neymar came off the bench in that match and scored a stoppage-time penalty, but it was not enough to prevent Brazil's exit. Speaking immediately after the game, the veteran forward hinted that his time with the national team had come to an end.

"I tried, I tried. Now it's over," he said.

The defeat was an emotional moment for Neymar, who was visibly upset after the final whistle as Brazil's long wait for a sixth World Cup title continued.

Neymar represented Brazil at four World Cups and leaves behind one of the greatest international careers in the country's history. He scored 80 goals and provided 58 assists in 130 appearances, making him Brazil's leading scorer.

At international level, his only senior trophy was the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, although he enjoyed major success in club football with Santos, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

While the Brazilian Football Confederation has yet to confirm Neymar's retirement, the forward's latest remarks strongly suggest his remarkable international journey has come to an end.
