India's Ravindra Jadeja wants to complete career with Test captaincy

India's Ravindra Jadeja wants to complete career with Test captaincy

The veteran has been in the Indian national team setup across all three formats since 2009 and his considered one of the finest all-rounders to have played the game. This year, he became the longest-reigning world number one Test all-rounder, as per the ICC player rankings.

His Test numbers support this. Jadeja’s left-arm spin has collected 323 wickets, while he averages a healthy 34.74 with the bat, along with four centuries.

Now at 36 years old, Jadeja is in the twilight years of his career, but is still looking for new achievements.

In a jovial conversation on former India star Ravichandran Ashwin's YouTube channel, Jadeja outlined his final goal.

"Just one thing is left... Test captaincy," said the 80-Test veteran.

"I've mostly achieved everything else, and it is a moment of pride to be Test Captain or lead India.

"Captaincy is something that can be learned with time. But I believe that an experienced cricketer understands the pulse of the game."

Jadeja played much of his career under the studious captaincy of India legend MS Dhoni, where he learned leadership skills.

"He is so great that you can't describe him in just one word," reflected Jadeja.

"He is on top of everyone. I've never once heard him talk about his personal milestones. He always thought about the other ten players in the team."

However, it appears that Jadeja will have to wait his turn to realise a dream. In the wake of Rohit Sharma's retirement, India stalwart Shubman Gill was recently announced as India's new Test captain.
