IPL: Mumbai Indians snatch thrilling 6-wicket win over Punjab Kings

Having won the toss and elected to bowl, MI showed their chasing pedigree in a high-scoring contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final moments.

Punjab Kings got off to a solid start but couldn't quite build a match-defining total. Opener Prabhsimran Singh led the charge with a fluent 57 off 32 balls (6 fours, 4 sixes), setting a strong platform. All-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai then exploded in the death overs, smashing 38 off just 17 deliveries (2 fours, 4 sixes) to inject momentum.

Late cameos from Vishnu Vinod (15 off 8) and Xavier Bartlett (18 off 7) pushed PBKS to 200, but the innings was punctuated by regular wickets. MI's Shardul Thakur was the standout bowler, claiming an impressive 4/39 in his four overs, well supported by Deepak Chahar (2/36) and useful spells from Corbin Bosch and Raj Bawa.

The chase began explosively for Mumbai Indians. Ryan Rickelton lit up the powerplay with a blistering 48 off 23 balls (4 fours, 4 sixes), while Rohit Sharma steadied the ship with 25.

After a mid-innings wobble, Tilak Varma took charge in sensational fashion, remaining unbeaten on 62 off 28 balls (6 fours, 4 sixes) at a strike rate of 221.43. Will Jacks provided the perfect finishing touch with 12 off 5, including a boundary and a six, as MI crossed the line in dramatic style.

Punjab Kings' bowlers fought bravely - Azmatullah Omarzai picked up 2/36 and Yuzvendra Chahal 1/32 - but the dew-assisted pitch and MI's aggressive batting proved too much. Marco Jansen (1/55) and others leaked runs under pressure in the death.

Star performers

- Shardul Thakur (MI): 4/39 - masterclass with the new ball and death overs that kept PBKS in check.
- Tilak Varma (MI): 62 off 28 - the match-winner who turned the chase around with clean, powerful striking.
- Prabhsimran Singh (PBKS): 57 off 32 - explosive opener who gave Punjab a fighting total.
- Azmatullah Omarzai (PBKS): 38 off 17 + 2/36 - all-round hero who nearly turned the game with bat and ball.
- Ryan Rickelton (MI): 48 off 23 - explosive start that set the platform for the successful chase.

In the end, Mumbai Indians' composure under pressure and Tilak Varma's brilliance sealed a memorable win on a pitch that favoured batters but rewarded smart bowling and finishing. A classic IPL thriller that perfectly summed up the entertainment this season continues to deliver.
