Thomas Tuchel backs Harry Kane to deliver as England face Serbia in World Cup qualifier test
Thomas Tuchel has expressed full confidence in Harry Kane as England prepare for a key 2026 World Cup qualifier against Serbia in Belgrade on Tuesday.
Bethell has been with the England squad since the start of June but made his first appearance of the season for the team in the fifth Test of the India tour at the end of July.
In that time, he had plenty of opportunities to play cricket in order to keep himself in top shape but only managed four games - three on the T20 Blast and one County Championship game - during which he only faced 85 balls at the crease.
He struggled to make an impact for England against India, scoring 6 and 5 in his two innings in the fifth Test as the Three Lions were defeated to allow India to level the series.
When asked if he maybe should have played a bit more in the County Championship while he was not in the team, Bethell admitted his lack of cricket could have been a reason why he struggled so much against India.
"If I'm honest, I probably should have played slightly more when I wasn't playing in the Test matches, but that's something that I'll take and I'll learn from that," he told Sky Sports.
"Even though I didn't play much in that Test series, I was around the group for a lot of it, and just to watch a high-octane Test series like that was unbelievable.
"I got a chance in the last Test and unfortunately couldn't go on there and put in a performance, but I've loved [the summer]. Playing for England is a dream come true and hopefully I can do it for a long time to come.
"Now I'm looking at what I have ahead and there's a lot of cricket, so that little gap where I didn't play actually might be quite nice for me.
"We're very clear that he can step into that role and be very comfortable with that," Trescothick said. "The attention has been outside of our circle.
"There's been some media scrutiny around him playing and doing this job [captaincy], but within our circle that's never been the case. We manage it accordingly and we're not going to put anyone in a position that is not suitable to their character or their calibre."
