Jonathan Trott cools speculation on England role as he departs Afghanistan

Jonathan Trott cools speculation on England role as he departs Afghanistan

Trott watched on his Afghanistan team beat Canada by 82 runs in their final group encounter at the T20 World Cup, which they have exited.

It brought to an end Trott's three-and-a-half-year stay with Asian outfit, having taken charge of the country in July 2022.

Afghanistan scaled new heights under Trott, beating England and Pakistan at the ODI World Cup in 2023 while also reaching the semifinals of the T20 World Cup in 2024.

The achievements have seen Trott being linked with the England coaching job, having already taken franchise league roles with Pretoria Capitals in 2025 and the Gulf Giants in 2026.

Trott played 52 Tests for England between 2009 and 2015 and was part of the team that won three consecutive Ashes.

He told reporters: "I don't know what the future holds. Maybe I have a couple of days off and see how it goes. And I look forward to seeing how the rest of the World Cup goes. I wish we were still here and able to play in the next round.

"I am very proud of the way I played my career, and always like to see the England side do well. I'd love to one day, hopefully, have the opportunity to coach a team that you hold so dear to your heart.

"There are a lot of people that I'm sure would love to do that job. So yeah, we'll have to see. But I just want to enjoy my coaching.

"And, you know, I've certainly enjoyed the last couple of years here."

Trott said he hoped Afghanistan would develop more fast bowlers, ahead of the 2027 World Cup that will be played in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
