Mamelodi Sundowns claim slender advantage in CAF Champions League final

Aubrey Modiba scored the decisive goal in an entertaining and highly competitive encounter, curling home a superb free-kick in the 38th minute to give the Brazilians the breakthrough they deserved after a dominant first-half display.

The victory gives last season’s CAF Champions League runners-up a narrow edge heading into the decisive second leg in Rabat next Sunday, although the tie remains finely balanced.

Sundowns controlled possession from the opening whistle and created several promising opportunities during the first half, applying sustained pressure on the Moroccan side. Their persistence paid off when Modiba stepped up to deliver a brilliantly struck set-piece that left AS FAR goalkeeper Reda Tagnaouti with no chance.

The start of the second half was delayed by approximately 20 minutes due to technical issues involving the VAR system. Once play resumed, Sundowns continued to dictate proceedings and created numerous chances to extend their lead.

Colombian striker Brayan Leon was particularly wasteful in front of goal, missing at least three clear opportunities that could have put the home side firmly in control of the tie.

Kutlwano Letlhaku also came close late in the match, forcing an excellent save from Tagnaouti, while midfielder Teboho Mokoena rattled the crossbar with a powerful effort in the closing stages.

Despite failing to add to their advantage, Sundowns will take confidence from a disciplined defensive performance and their overall dominance ahead of the return leg.

The second leg will be played at the Prince Moulay Abdallah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday, 24 May, where the winner on aggregate will be crowned CAF Champions League champions.
