Man City star Antoine Semenyo explains 'easy' decision to represent Ghana over England

The 26-year-old was born in London to Ghanaian parents and was eligible to represent the Three Lions if they had decided to call him up.

However, Semenyo ended up making his debut for the Black Stars in June 2022 against Madagascar in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, which Ghana won 3–0.

"I was never in the England rankings like that anyway," admitted the forward to The Mixer podcast.

"Ghana came [when I was] 20, 21? And I can't turn down playing first team for Ghana, so it was such an easy decision. My dad was so happy, celebrating. He was like, 'Yeah, you don't play for England!'.

"Everyone in my family was so happy. They support Ghana, I couldn't even tell you. They watch games and it's crazy. Shouting, kicking stuff in the house. It's serious."

The former Bournemouth star has had a sterling season despite joining City mid season, scoring 18 goals and providing six assists in all competitions, while helping his nation to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana are set to face his country of birth England in their second match of the tournament in Group L, which also consists of Panama and Croatia.

Semenyo has made 34 appearances for Ghana, scoring three goals and contributing one assist.
