Miguel Cardoso hails Mamelodi Sundowns character after comeback win over Leipzig

The recently crowned CAF Champions League winners went behind in the first half when Samba Konate unleashed a powerful finish, but Sundowns showed their resilience after the break. Brayan Leon scored twice before youngster Bennet Mokoena put the result beyond doubt with a stunning late strike.

The victory provided a fitting end to a memorable season for the Brazilians, who lifted the CAF Champions League trophy in Rabat just a week ago.

Cardoso praised his team's commitment and willingness to stick to their playing style despite coming under pressure against quality opposition.

"I think the first half was very good in terms of commitment from the team, trying to stay organised and keep the ball as much as possible," Cardoso told SABC Sport.

"We saw Denis giving the strongest example of how to keep the ball, always making himself available under pressure. I told the players they had to enjoy the game and express themselves."

The Portuguese mentor revealed that his halftime message focused on maintaining intensity and discipline, while encouraging the players to continue playing with freedom.

"They were feeling comfortable, so I told them to keep the rhythm, dynamics and discipline. It was a match with responsibility, but without pressure regarding the result, and we had a beautiful game."

Cardoso also highlighted the contributions of several young players, including Mokoena and Kutlwano Letlhaku, while stressing that the performance was built on a collective effort.

With the campaign now complete, Sundowns will enjoy a two-week break before turning their attention to the challenges of next season.

"We showed that we can compete against teams of this level, and that is very important because we will continue to play many international matches. We will do our best to remain at that standard," Cardoso added.
