Missed chances cost Bafana Bafana in friendly draw with Panama

Hugo Broos' side controlled large periods of the encounter and consistently found space behind Panama's defence, yet a lack of clinical finishing proved costly.

The result will be viewed as disappointing, particularly given that Panama sit 26 places higher in the FIFA rankings and relied largely on a single defensive lapse to score.

South Africa's equaliser arrived early in the second half, when Khuliso Mudau atoned for his earlier mistake by directing a header into the path of Oswin Appollis, who calmly finished for his eighth international goal in the 49th minute. Appollis had earlier squandered a clear opportunity, shooting straight at goalkeeper Luis Mejia.

Bafana created several high-quality chances throughout the match. Lyle Foster endured a particularly frustrating outing, missing multiple opportunities, including a one-on-one chance after rounding the keeper and another effort against substitute Orlando Mosquera.

Tshepang Moremi and Ime Okon also came close before the break, while Themba Zwane impressed on his first appearance since October 2024, providing composure and creativity before being replaced by Relebohile Mofokeng just after the hour mark.

Panama had taken the lead against the run of play when Yoel Bárcenas capitalised on a Mudau error, advancing into the box and finishing low.

Defensively, the inexperienced pairing of Khulumani Ndamane and Okon were largely untroubled. Attention now turns to the second friendly between the sides in Cape Town on Tuesday, where Bafana will look to improve their finishing.
