Mohammed Siraj and KL Rahul star as India dominate Day 1 against West Indies

Seamers Mohammed Siraj (4/40) and Jasprit Bumrah took seven wickets between them as India skittled the visitors for 162 in 44 overs in front of a scant crowd at India’s Parthenon of Cricket.

In response, openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal were measured. The duo poked and prodded their way to an opening partnership of 68 before Jaiswal (36) nicked off to Jayden Seals. Sai Sudharsan fell six overs later after being trapped in front by Chase.

But Rahul remained in control and notched up an unbeaten half-century as India finished the day 41 runs behind the West Indies with eight wickets in hand.

Earlier, the India quicks took advantage of the green surface, extracting bounce and swing in the opening hour. Siraj struck first when Tagenarine Chanderpaul gloved one down legside, then the mercurial Bumrah drew an outside edge from John Campbell.

Siraj continued his domination with the dismissals of Brandon King, who shouldered arms to a straight one, and Alick Athanaze, who was caught at second slip. That left the visitors teetering on 42/4.

Captain Roston Chase and Shai Hope steadied the ship to add 48 much-needed runs for the fifth wicket. Playing in his first test since February 2024, tweaker Kuldeep Yadav produced a stunner to clean bowl Hope for 26.

Chase fell shortly afterwards as Siraj picked up his fourth wicket. All-rounder Justin Greaves combined with Khary Pierre for some late resistance, with the former top-scoring for the West Indies with 32.

Spinner Washington Sundar, together with Yadav and Burah, cleaned up the tail double-quick.
