Ogenyi Onazi sees 2013 echoes in Nigeria's revamped AFCON squad

Head coach Eric Chelle's 28-man selection for the tournament, which kicks off later this month, has sparked debate nationwide.

While some established internationals were left out, the inclusion of several relatively unknown players has signalled a shift toward rebuilding and long-term planning.

Players such as Ryan Alebiosu, Salim Fago Lawal, Ebenezer Akinsanmiro and Tochukwu Nnadi have been thrust into the spotlight, with many supporters questioning whether the squad has enough experience to challenge for continental honours.

However, Onazi insists that unfamiliarity should not be mistaken for weakness. Speaking to Footy-Africa, the AFCON winner drew parallels with Nigeria's triumphant 2013 campaign, when a largely unheralded group defied expectations to lift the trophy in South Africa.

"People doubted us in 2013 because many of us were new to the team," Onazi said.

"But we believed in ourselves, worked hard, and played for each other. That belief carried us all the way."

Chelle's decision to omit players such as Victor Boniface, Maduka Okoye and Tolu Arokodare has intensified scrutiny, while the recall of goalkeeper Francis Uzoho also raised eyebrows.

Yet the squad still boasts proven leaders, including Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, Zaidu Sanusi and Calvin Bassey, who are expected to guide the younger players through the tournament.

Onazi stressed that representing Nigeria comes with immense responsibility, regardless of age or reputation. "Once you wear that jersey, the only thing that matters is your heart," he said.

The Super Eagles will fine-tune their preparations against Egypt in a friendly in Cairo on December 16 before heading to Morocco, where they face Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda in Group B.
