Orlando Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha eyes breakthrough season

Mbatha, who joined the Buccaneers last year, has quietly established himself as a reliable and technically gifted presence in the middle of the park. Now, the 23-year-old believes it's time to take his game to the next level-mentally and physically.

"For me, personally, it's going to be a very interesting year. It's not going to be easy. This is a year where everything can change in a blink of an eye. I must stay focused and mentally strong," the 26-year-old midfielder was quoted by IOL.

With Pirates embarking on a demanding season that includes the Betway Premiership, CAF Champions League, and domestic cups, Mbatha knows the margin for error is slim.

The club recently wrapped up a two-week pre-season tour of Spain under new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, following the departure of Jose Riveiro to Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

Mbatha also has individual goals in sight. After missing out on a nomination for Midfielder of the Season last campaign, he's hungry to be in contention this time around.

"I wouldn't say I was disappointed, but I believe I did what I had to do. Those who were nominated also deserved it. I just need to keep working, and who knows what could happen?," he added.

With the AFCON around the corner and his eyes firmly on the prize, Mbatha is embracing the pressure and using it as fuel.

"We play a sport with a short career span. If I take care of myself and stay focused, I believe I can achieve everything I've set out to do."
