Oswin Appollis opens up on relationship with Orlando Pirates teammate Relebohile Mofokeng

The duo played a central role in Pirates' historic Betway Premiership triumph, helping the Buccaneers end a 14-year wait for the league title while also contributing to a successful campaign that delivered the MTN8 and Carling Knockout trophies.

Appollis, who enjoyed a sensational debut season after joining from Polokwane City, believes their partnership stems from countless conversations away from the spotlight. The pair became roommates upon his arrival at the club, creating an environment where football discussions became part of their daily routine.

"We are always talking in our room about what we can do to improve ourselves and the team," Appollis explained. "We speak about what we lack, what we can do better and what we can improve on. The good thing is that we manage to take some of those ideas onto the field."

According to the 24-year-old winger, their regular analysis of matches and football clips has helped sharpen their understanding of each other's movements, making their combination one of the most dangerous in the league.

"Sometimes it's just about movement on the field - how we move for each other and how the next teammate moves for us. It becomes easier during games because we've already discussed these things. We watch a lot of football and match clips together, so it all comes down to that."

The chemistry between the two attackers proved decisive throughout the season. Appollis contributed an impressive haul of goals and assists across all competitions, while Mofokeng once again delivered standout numbers as the pair emerged among the leading contenders for the PSL's top individual honours.

Their connection was particularly significant for Mofokeng, who had initially needed time to adjust following the departure of former attacking partner Mohau Nkota. As the season progressed, his understanding with Appollis flourished and became a key factor in Pirates' title-winning campaign.

However, Appollis insists their relationship extends far beyond football.

"Obviously, we play PlayStation and talk about things off the field too," he said. "But it goes beyond staying together at the hotel. We go out with our girlfriends, we visit each other's houses and spend time together away from football. We've built a great relationship since I arrived."

The bond has now carried over to the national team, with both players currently part of Hugo Broos' Bafana Bafana squad as they continue preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Given the success they have enjoyed together at club level, South African supporters will be hoping their partnership can provide the same spark on the international stage.
