Proteas star Rassie van der Dussen calls time on international career

The classy top-order batter featured in 18 Tests, 71 ODIs and 57 T20Is for the Proteas between October 2018 and August 2025. It was in the ODI format that van der Dussen flourished. Buoyed by several high-scoring not-outs, his average was well over 70 for the first two years of his career.

In the end, he would finish with six centuries, 17 fifties and an impressive ODI average of 50.13, second only to the generational talent of AB de Villiers among the South Africans.

"It is with a proud heart and a profound sense of gratitude that I announce my retirement from international cricket," read the 37-year-old's post in part on Instagram.

"To wear the Proteas jersey is a feat that demands a level of resilience and dedication that both tests, and rewards you in the most incredible way. To have played for my Country has been the greatest honour of my life.

"This journey has been paved with years of sacrifice, but the privilege of representing South Africa was worth every moment."

Van der Dussen was on a hybrid central contract with Cricket South Africa but was not re-signed for the 2026-27 season. He captained the Proteas in the T20 International tri-series against hosts Zimbabwe and New Zealand in early 2025 and last featured for the Proteas in the T20I series against Australia Down under in August. Fittingly, he scored 38 not out in his final match.

The Pretoria native confirmed that he will still be walking out with the Lions in domestic cricket.

"While my time in a Proteas shirt has come to an end, my journey is not over," the statement continued.

"I will continue to play for my beloved Lions, and I am committed to giving back to this beautiful game by teaching and mentoring the next generation of South African cricketers.

"I love South Africa, and I love cricket. Thank you for everything."
