Proteas Women slump to defeat against Australia in T20 World Cup opener

With the group containing Australia, India and South Africa, neither side could afford a sluggish start, but the Proteas were outplayed after allowing the six-time champions to recover from early trouble and post 172 for eight.

South Africa made the ideal start when Marizanne Kapp removed world No. 1 T20I batter Georgia Voll with her fourth delivery, Kayla Reyneke holding the catch at midwicket. Shabnim Ismail then dismissed Beth Mooney, ranked second in the world, after the opener edged behind to wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta.

However, Australia counterattacked through Phoebe Litchfield, who blasted 50 from just 23 balls, striking nine fours and a six. Supported by Elysse Perry, Annabel Sutherland and Georgia Wareham, Australia rebuilt effectively after losing early wickets.

Nonkululeko Mlaba was South Africa's standout bowler, returning excellent figures of 2 for 22 from four overs. Yet questions were raised over the limited use of spin, with Reyneke not called upon and Chloe Tryon unable to make a significant impact. The lack of spin options proved costly on a surface that later favoured Australia's slower bowlers.

Set a target that would have required the highest successful chase in Women's T20 World Cup history, South Africa remained competitive while captain Laura Wolvaardt was at the crease. But her dismissal by Sophie Molineux, caught by Wareham at extra cover, changed the course of the innings.

Molineux finished with 2 for 17, while Alana King, Ash Gardner and Wareham shared six wickets as Australia's spin attack tightened its grip.

Apart from a reprieve for Nadine de Klerk when Gardner accidentally deflected a catch over the boundary for six, South Africa found little momentum and their chase quickly unravelled.
