Report: Atletico Madrid step up pursuit of Tottenham captain Cristian Romero

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Atletico are leading the race for the Argentina international, with talks between the two clubs continuing. Romero has also reportedly agreed personal terms on a four-year contract worth around 180,000 pounds per week.

The remaining hurdle is the transfer fee, with Tottenham believed to value the defender at around 40 million euros. Atletico are expected to return with an improved offer as they look to reach an agreement.

Arsenal also made an enquiry for Romero after William Saliba suffered a long-term back injury, but Tottenham immediately rejected any chance of selling their captain to one of their biggest Premier League rivals.

Inter Milan had previously made progress towards signing Romero and reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Tottenham over a transfer worth 40 million euros. However, that move has stalled because the Italian club must first sell Benjamin Pavard and reduce their wage bill before they can meet Romero's salary demands.

Despite interest from several clubs, Atletico now appear to be in the strongest position to secure the 28-year-old's signature.

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi recently admitted he could not guarantee Romero would remain at the club, adding further weight to expectations that the defender could leave before the transfer window closes.
