Report: Manchester City challenge Chelsea in Xavi Simons chase

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has already agreed personal terms with Chelsea, but the London club have yet to finalise a deal with his current side. That impasse could give City an opening to intervene, although their interest is understood to be at the exploratory stage.

Any serious push from the Premier League champions is likely to depend on player departures. While City are reluctant to part with Brazilian winger Savinho, the youngster has been linked with a switch to Tottenham Hotspur, and a transfer could be sanctioned if he pushes to leave.

Midfielder James McAtee appears close to joining Nottingham Forest, while Jack Grealish has already completed a loan move to Everton, leaving Pep Guardiola with fewer attacking options than usual.

Simons' appeal lies in his versatility. Primarily an attacking midfielder, he is equally comfortable operating on either flank, offering Guardiola the kind of tactical flexibility he values highly.

With his ability to adapt across the front line, Simons could provide an immediate boost to City's squad depth.

Chelsea, however, remain in pole position, having already secured the player's agreement in principle. They will be keen to reach an accord with his club quickly to ward off City's potential challenge.
