The 29-year-old is currently with Spain at their pre-tournament training camp and was repeatedly asked about reports connecting him with a move to the Spanish giants following City's recent managerial change and Madrid's continued interest in the Ballon d'Or winner.
"We're here to talk about the World Cup," Rodri told reporters. "In terms of my future, I'll wait until the World Cup is over.
"It's normal, it's a part of football, names of players being linked to particular clubs. I'm focused, I'm captain of the national team. My responsibility is to accept it. I'm a leader in the group, my only job is to help Spain win this World Cup.
"I won't waste time on all that, and after the World Cup, we'll see."
Rodri's comments are unlikely to quiet speculation surrounding his future. Real Madrid have long admired the midfielder and their interest has become increasingly public in recent months. Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme recently described Rodri as "the kind of player who has to play for Real Madrid", while the player himself has previously acknowledged the attraction of returning to Spain before the end of his career.
Speaking during a previous international break in March, Rodri said he would not rule out a move to Madrid despite having started his professional career with city rivals Atletico Madrid.
"For me, you can't turn down the best clubs in the world," he said at the time. "They have a fanbase that really goes all out for them, and for me, the Bernabeu is always incredible, a stadium that's very imposing."
The uncertainty comes at a pivotal moment for both player and club. Rodri has been one of City's most influential figures since arriving from Atletico in 2019, helping the club win multiple Premier League titles, domestic cups and the Champions League. His importance to the team has been underlined by City's significantly stronger record when he is in the side.
After a difficult period disrupted by a serious knee injury suffered in September 2024, Rodri has worked his way back to full fitness and believes he is entering the World Cup in an ideal condition.
"I'm very happy and excited," he said. "I was just joking that it's the first time I've arrived fresh, and without so many games.
"I've been able to overcome everything. I'm coming in with less rhythm, but fewer matches under my belt."
For now, Rodri's focus remains on leading Spain's bid for World Cup glory. Any decision over whether his long-term future lies at City or elsewhere appears set to be postponed until the tournament concludes.
