Rulani Mokwena rejects espionage claims ahead of high-stakes Sundowns showdown

Rulani Mokwena rejects espionage claims ahead of high-stakes Sundowns showdown

The controversy emerged after Sundowns placed analyst Mario Masha on suspension pending an internal investigation, following reports that he shared sensitive tactical details with Mokwena ahead of the Group-stage clash in Pretoria. Masha has strongly denied any wrongdoing.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Mokwena was unequivocal in his response, stressing that his professional ethics had been unfairly questioned. He explained that the communication in question related to academic and developmental discussions, rather than match-specific intelligence.

"Reputation is built over years of conduct, not anonymous screenshots," Mokwena said.

He clarified that Masha had approached him for guidance while working toward his UEFA coaching licence, asking for input on methodologies and tactical concepts previously explored during their time together at Sundowns.

Mokwena added that examples referenced in those discussions included European football models, notably approaches used by Manchester City, and not any current tactical plans employed by Sundowns.

"At no point did I receive or request confidential information," he insisted.

"I would never ask someone to compromise their integrity or risk their career for a competitive advantage."

Saturday's match carries significant weight for both sides. Sundowns require a victory to keep their qualification hopes alive after an inconsistent group campaign, while MC Alger know that a draw would be sufficient to see them progress.

Mokwena's history with the Tshwane giants runs deep. He previously served as assistant to Pitso Mosimane, later forming part of a co-coaching setup with Manqoba Mngqithi, before taking charge as head coach.

As kick-off approaches, Mokwena maintained that the focus should remain on football - not unfounded allegations.
