Ryan Rickelton, Shukri Conrad mend strained relationship ahead of WTC final

Despite dominating the domestic circuit for the Lions, Rickelton spent extended periods on the fringes of the national setup. He was included in Conrad's first squad for the West Indies Test series in March 2023 but was left out of the XI for the opening Test in Centurion.

His opportunity came in the second Test at the Wanderers, where Conrad publicly backed him. "He will be a big part of the side," Conrad said at the time. "He is someone we will start building the Test side around."

However, consistent selection didn't immediately follow. It wasn't until Rickelton scored a commanding 259 against Pakistan at Newlands in January that he seemingly locked down his place.

Reflecting on that period, Rickelton admitted to the Sunday Times that Conrad's early comments created tension when actions didn't align with words.

"When he made that statement about me being in the central spot - after what followed - there was turmoil between us. I didn't want to engage with him, in all honesty," he said.

The turning point came during South Africa's tour of the West Indies last year, where the pair engaged in open discussions about Rickelton's role in the team.

"He's been pretty blunt and honest with me," Rickelton said. "Now that he's taken over the white-ball group too, he's been clear about how I fit in there as well. I can appreciate that honesty. I do feel he backs me."

The left-hander emphasised the importance of clarity and communication from team management.

"We're grown men, we can have those conversations. It might not always be favourable, but at least you know where you stand - and you can be judged accordingly."

With Conrad now confirming Rickelton will partner Aiden Markram at the top of the order for the WTC final, the 26-year-old will have a chance to repay that faith on the biggest stage of his Test career to date.
