Sandro Tonali departure hinges on Newcastle decision

Tonali has been linked with a move away from Newcastle this summer, following last year's high-profile departure of Alexander Isak to Liverpool. Isak's exit was drawn out and controversial, with the Sweden international training away from the squad and issuing a public statement before the transfer was finalised.

Speaking directly about Tonali, Hopkinson said: "We haven't got an overall strategy with regard to players out, necessarily. We think through what players might or might not want to do this summer. But if an Isak-like scenario presents itself again, any player under contract is going to leave on our terms and we're going to maximise the opportunity that might represent for the club."

He added: "Going forward, our strategy is to buy well and sell well. Buying well does not necessarily mean spending the most money. It means working in the marketplace for the players that generate the most value for this club rather than the fee paid for them.

"We also focus on developing our own players, looking for opportunities in the marketplace, and making sure we are maximising our opportunities within the available price we can produce."

As of March 2026, Manchester United is reported to be the leading club interested in Tonali. The "Red Devils" are planning a major midfield overhaul, reportedly with the support of captain Bruno Fernandes.

Arsenal, Manchester City, and Real Madrid are also monitoring the Italian midfielder, while Juventus face financial obstacles to making a move.

Newcastle remains in a strong negotiating position, with Tonali under contract until 2029, plus a club option for 2030. The club has reportedly set an asking price between eighty million and one hundred million pounds.
