South Africa U19 fall short in weather-affected World Cup warm-up against Sri Lanka

The bowlers did a good job in restricting Sri Lanka to 225 all out off 48.3 overs, especially after Dimantha Mahavithana and Viran Chamuditha got them off to a flying start.

The pair put on 100 for the first wicket before Mahavithana was out LBW for 45 by Daniel Bosman.

A flurry of wickets thereafter brought the young South Africans back into the game as they pulled Sri Lanka back to 149/4.

Another good partnership between Kavija Gamage and Chamika Heenatigala got Sri Lanka back on track before the latter was dismissed for 14, taking them to 201/5.

It was all South Africa's bowlers thereafter as wickets fell at regular intervals to see Sri Lanka bowled out for 225 in 48.2 overs.

Chamuditha was the star for the batting side with 87 off 93 balls, while Gamage also chipped in with 48 from 56 balls.

The young Proteas used nine bowlers in total, with Bosman being the standout after returning figures of 35/3 in his seven overs.

South Africa's response was interrupted on a couple of occasions by rain, making it difficult for them to build up any kind of momentum and reducing their innings to a maximum of 36 overs.

Muhammed Bulbulia starred with the bat, coming in at No 3, scoring 54 runs off 48 balls, but the regular reduction of overs meant they constantly had to be pushing for runs and wickets fell at regular intervals.

Only five batters managed to score in double figures, with Lethabo Phahlamohlaka making the second top score of 3,0 providing some hope down the order.

However, they ultimately fell 12 runs short in a tough rain-affected chase but they will likely be pleased with the warm-up as everyone got a chance to bat and they tried out plenty of bowling options.
