Tazmin Brits ton leads Proteas Women to series win in West Indies

A brilliant performance with the bat and ruthless accuracy with the ball helped the Proteas Women secure a 2-1 series victory over the hosts.

Winning the toss for the series decider, West Indies Women captain Haley Matthews put the visitors into bat first at the overcast Cave Hill. But the South African openers were in a dominant mood. Britz and captain Laura Wolvaardt took the West Indian attack apart from the very first over.

The duo brought up the 100 partnership in the 13th over and still Britz put her foot on the accelerator, with a flurry of sixes bringing up her century off just 89 balls. The West Indies Women finally struck in the 26th over through Affy Fletcher, making the score 189/1.

A couple of rain interruptions hampered South Africa's progress to a hefty total. Each time the game restarted, they would lose wickets. Wolvaardt was dismissed for a well-played 75 off 76, while Nondumiso Shangase and Sune Luus fell cheaply.

Stalwart Marizanne Kapp kept the scoreboard ticking, but the Proteas Women slumped to 278/6 in the shortened match.

The hosts were in deep trouble right from the start, with Kapp and Masabata Klaas combining to reduce the West Indies to 10/4 in just the third over. Spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba got in on the action and the contest was all but over at 40/6.

Aaiyah Alleyne and Jahzara Claxton provided some resistance down the order with 32 and 43 respectively, but ultimately the West Indies Women were bowled out for 121. Klaas was the pick of the Proteas Women bowlers with a neat 3/23.
