It was spin-to-win in the second Test and the hosts came up well short. Spinners ended up taking 20 of the 30 wickets that fell to bowlers on the crumbling Port of Spain track, but the hosts only fielded one spinner.
Ali Usman and Sajid Khan laid waste to the West Indies batting lineup in the second innings, combining for 8/71 to all but seal the victory.
Meanwhile, the hosts had left-armer Jomel Warrican and Chase in support to take advantage of the conditions. But Chase is still coming back from a finger injury and only managed seven overs in the first innings.
"I don't want to say we misread the pitch, but we didn't think that it was going to spin as much from so early," Chase said in the post-match press conference.
"So I think that is where the problem came in. And also my injury, I think that we thought I would have been able to bowl a lot more, but rushing back from the injury a bit too quickly, and I was still in some pain in terms of bowling. So I think that was a bit of a dilemma for us."
Chase went on to say that he tried to unleash his quicks against the resolute Pakistan batters, but the tactic failed.
"I think it's a case where we needed to be more patient and just try to defend one side of the wicket and just try to squeeze them as much as possible into making a mistake," he added.
But we still tried to blast them out per se, and I think that gave them too many runs before we really locked it down and stuck to the plan and were a bit more disciplined."
Chase went on to say that he would have preferred a deck that aided his potent seamers.
"Obviously, with a bowling attack like ours, the strength is in the pace bowling," he said.
"I would have liked, obviously, a bit more grass and something a bit more advantageous to the fast bowlers, but we didn't get that, and we saw it from even before the game started, so we knew what was in front of us but I would still like to have a pitch that would have assisted the fast bowlers a bit more."
Joe Root will return to the captaincy when England begin their three-match Test series against Pakistan later this month, with selectors announcing a 16-man squad for the opening two fixtures.
