WTC Final: David Bedingham confident Proteas can make history at Lord's

Bedingham top-scored in his team's first innings with 45 out of a paltry total of 138 all out to concede a lead of 74 following Australia's 212 on the first day.

The Proteas came roaring back into the contest though as they reduced Australia to 144-8 at stumps on day two, an overall lead of 218 runs.

Even though the batting unit stumbled in the first innings, Bedingham believes they have what it to takes to pull off a successful run-chase and win a first ICC trophy in 27 years.

Speaking to reporters at the post-play presser, the middle-order batter said: "It is an amazing chance and we are very excited about the opportunity to win.

"It could go either way but there is a lot of belief. We are very confident, the batters will have their individual plans ready for the innings.

"I think it was an amazing day of cricket and when they started batting in the third innings, we would have taken them at what is effectively 220 for eight.

"We are confident and there is massive belief in this team."

Bedingham also praised the efforts of Lungi Ngidi after the paceman bowled a nine-over spell to take 3-35 to break open the Australian innings.

The seamer had struggled for rhythm in the first innings when he only bowled eight overs and was expensive as he went for 45 runs.

Bedingham added: "Lungi is a chilled guy so I don't think his first innings it would have affected him that much.

"I think he struggled at one end and to changed to the other and it made a difference. To bowl nine overs on the bounce takes a lot of effort and we are lucky to have him."
