Arne Slot addresses Wataru Endo's limited game time for Liverpool

Arne Slot addresses Wataru Endo's limited game time for Liverpool

Endo remains Liverpool's only orthodox defensive midfielder, yet he has accumulated a mere 36 minutes of Premier League action this season, spread across four substitute appearances.

His only starts have come in the League Cup, and he has featured just once briefly in the league since August.

The debate around his limited involvement has intensified in recent weeks as Liverpool's midfield struggles have contributed to the concession of 10 goals in their last three matches.

Many fans believe Endo's natural defensive instincts could help stabilise the team, particularly with the side appearing increasingly porous during transitions.

Slot, however, has maintained that there is currently no urgency to rely on the 32-year-old. He argues that Ryan Gravenberch's strong form has provided the balance and energy he requires in midfield, reducing the immediate need to turn to a more traditional holding option.

While acknowledging the scrutiny over Liverpool's defensive openness, Slot insists his selections reflect the overall structure he wants the team to adopt rather than any doubts over Endo's ability.

"I prefer not to talk about individuals but since you ask, he is in the position Ryan is in. Ryan is not performing the worst from all of our players," said Slot.

"That is Ryan's best position and the same as Wata. When I used him as a right-back against Bournemouth I got criticised, I got told I got criticised.

"Ryan is one of the few who has been fit throughout the whole season. That is the answer."
