Aubrey Modiba boost gives Bafana Bafana timely lift ahead of Mexico World Cup opener

The Mamelodi Sundowns defender has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury during the first leg of the CAF Champions League final on May 17, but his recovery has progressed well during South Africa's preparations in Mexico.

Broos revealed that Modiba is set to rejoin full training and remains hopeful the experienced left-back will be available for selection at the Azteca Stadium.

"I think things are going well with Aubrey and we'll give him special treatment, so I think from tomorrow he will train with the group," Broos told SABC Sport.

"And if nothing happens in the next few days, Aubrey should be available for the game on Thursday."

The 29-year-old's return would provide a timely boost for South Africa, with Modiba a key figure in Broos' plans thanks to his versatility, experience and ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch. His absence had opened the door for Samukele Kabini and Bradley Cross to impress during recent friendlies.

Broos also underlined the importance of the strong Sundowns contingent within his squad, believing their experience of high-pressure continental football benefits the entire group.

"It's very important to have players in the group that are used to playing on another level than the PSL," he said.

"With the players of Sundowns, they are already a little bit used to playing very important games where there is a lot of pressure. They can also affect the other players in the attitude and the way of training."

South Africa have based themselves in Pachuca as they acclimatise to the altitude and conditions ahead of the tournament. Broos identified the city shortly after the World Cup draw and believes it offers the ideal environment for preparation.

"It's very important. Once we knew the draw in December and we knew we had to play our first game against Mexico, immediately I knew we needed a place where we could prepare in relation to the high altitude," he said.

Broos also praised the facilities and hospitality in Pachuca, insisting the team has everything required to prepare for its biggest test in years.

With Modiba nearing a return and the squad settled in Mexico, Bafana head into their opening match with growing confidence ahead of a daunting encounter against the tournament co-hosts.
