Brighton unite behind Danny Welbeck as England recall debate builds

Tuchel will name his squad on Friday for England's final qualifiers against Serbia and Albania. With qualification for next year's World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico already secured, the Germany-born coach is expected to experiment with his options.

Welbeck, 34, has scored six goals in his last five Premier League matches, including a free kick against his former club Manchester United. He is currently the top English scorer in the league this season.

Hurzeler revealed his Brighton squad had discussed Welbeck's situation and agreed he should be selected.

"It's a topic at the moment," Hurzeler said. "We talked about it briefly, and everyone had the same opinion. I've never seen a team agree 100 percent on something like this. Danny is doing very well and deserves credit for that.

"I wouldn't swap Danny Welbeck for any player in the world. He's a great professional, a leader, and an example for others. He's in outstanding shape."

Former England captain Wayne Rooney also backed Welbeck for a recall.

"He's the most in-form English striker behind Harry Kane," Rooney said on The Wayne Rooney Show podcast. "He's scoring goals, working hard, and has put himself in a position where Tuchel has to look at him. He's settled at Brighton and deserves that chance."

Welbeck has 46 England caps but has not featured for the national team since the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
