Nasief Morris gears up for gruelling ABC Motsepe campaign with Cape Town Spurs

The former Bafana Bafana defender has returned to Ikamva to lead Spurs in rebuilding from the lower ranks and challenging for promotion.

Morris brings a wealth of experience, having played for Santos, Panathinaikos, Racing Santander, and Recreativo Huelva, and previously served as Shaun Bartlett's assistant in both the Motsepe Foundation Championship and the Betway Premiership.

After a brief stint coaching the University of Cape Town Ladies team, he was recalled to guide Spurs following the club's failed attempt to acquire a higher-division status. He will be assisted by former Santos teammate and ex-Orlando Pirates attacker Tyren Arendse.

The new season begins on Saturday, 15 November, with Spurs hosting Zizwe United at Ikamva. Morris acknowledges the league's physicality and unpredictability.

"This is a league where skill alone won't win games. Teams play on the second ball or rely on physicality. We'll aim to play proper football, but we'll have to win ugly. There will be battles, and the teams that fight hardest and score will earn points," he was quoted by FarPost.

CT Spurs have already suffered early disappointment, losing 1-0 to Batalions FC in the Nedbank Cup playoffs. Morris blamed nerves and extreme heat for the setback but emphasized the team dominated chances, hitting the post multiple times.

The squad has undergone major changes, with 21 departures and 12 new signings, blending NFD experience with Motsepe talent.

"I'm happy with the group. We have a solid foundation, but discipline and focus will be crucial this season," Morris said.

The Western Cape division is split into two streams, with winners advancing to a provincial final. The overall champions then face other provincial winners for promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship - an uphill challenge that Morris and his Spurs side are ready to meet head-on.
