The Giallorossi currently enjoy a settled midfield, with Bryan Cristante and Manu Kone forming a reliable base, while Neil El Aynaoui has grown into his role following a rocky start.
But Roma are bracing for disruption: El Aynaoui, a Moroccan international, is expected to depart for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (running from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026), potentially sidelining him for around a month during a crucial stretch that includes matches against Genoa (December 29), Atalanta (January 3), Torino (January 18), and Coppa Italia ties.
With departures like Lucas Gourna-Douath (whose loan from Red Bull Salzburg ended in June) and Leandro Paredes (who returned to Boca Juniors in July after activating a release clause) from last season and limited reinforcements so far, Roma need reinforcements. Their owners, the Friedkins, are keen to back the manager, but bringing in a centre-forward without bolstering midfield could leave the squad vulnerable.
Enter Frendrup. The 24-year-old Dane has emerged as a top target: Genoa value him at around 20 million euros.
He is admired for his energy, versatility, and defensive strength, qualities that shine in Gian Piero Gasperini's preferred high-pressing system, according to reports. Gasperini has reportedly recommended the player to the club.
Frendrup's statistics back up the interest. In the 2023-24 Serie A season, he led the league in tackles (129) and ranked highly for recoveries (196), all while picking up just six yellow cards. Last season (2024-25), he again ranked among the top players for tackles (104) and recoveries.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter Milan are also in the race. Coach Gasperini has made no secret of his desire for a "balancer" in midfield, and Frendrup fits the bill.
But any move will depend heavily on Genoa's willingness to negotiate, and whether Roma or Inter can meet their demands.
If Roma manage to sign Frendrup in January, they could fill the gap left by El Aynaoui's absence while also laying the groundwork for a more robust and physically dynamic midfield.
