Davis Thompson in pole position for second PGA Tour title at John Deere Classic
American Davis Thompson will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the John Deere Classic in Illinois on Sunday.
Both Campbell and Grillo carded final-round 67s at TPC Deere Run to finish tied at 18 under par, topping a tightly packed leaderboard that saw 14 players within two shots of the lead with nine holes remaining.
Returning to the 18th for the play-off, Grillo was unable to save par after missing the green long and failing to get up and down.
Campbell's approach shot landed roughly 15 feet from the flag. Though his birdie attempt slid by, he calmly rolled in the par putt to secure the title after Grillo failed to convert his par save.
"I feel like I hit some great putts," Grillo said. "I gave my 100%. I played really well. I think I hit every fairway today, except for that first in the play-off. Unlucky, but it is what it is. It's golf. Sometimes you got to take what you get."
The victory adds to Campbell's earlier triumph at the Mexico Open and makes him the fifth player this season with multiple PGA Tour wins, joining Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Sepp Straka, and Ryan Fox.
Kevin Roy and David Lipsky finished one shot back in a tie for third, while Max Homa shared fifth at 16 under with Matt Kuchar and 2009 U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover.
