Erik van Rooyen one off the pace at PGA Tour's World Wide Technology Championship

Van Rooyen - the defending champion at this week's PGA Tour stop at El Cardonal at Diamante in Los Cabos - mixed six birdies and two bogeys to lie just one shot behind first-round leaders Kevin Streelman, Tom Whitney and Rico Hoey.

Van Rooyen shares fourth place with six Americans on what is a tightly-packed leaderboard - Taylor Montgomery, Max Greyserman, Nate Lashley, Austin Eckroat, Kelly Kraft and Ryan McCormick.

Conditions were tough on the day, with high winds making life tricky for the players, but Van Rooyen fared better than most on a golf course he clearly has an affinity for.

The 34-year-old has had a solid year on the PGA Tour and currently lies 62nd in the FedEx Cup. His best result came at the Cognizant Classic in March where a closing 63 saw him tie for second place.

He represented South Africa in the Olympics and finished 17th.

Van Rooyen was four shots off the pace in when he made the turn on the final day of last year's World Wide Technology Championship only to snatch victory by shooting eight-under 28 coming home.
