Gary Player claims the Ryder Cup has become "the worst event in the world"

The 2025 Ryder Cup made many headlines for all the wrong reasons as the patriotic galleries took their passion too far. During Team Europe's dramatic 15-13 victory at Bethpage, the visiting team endured insults and missiles of all sorts from the New York crowd.

Speaking to the Palm Beach Post, Player was flabbergasted.

"I look at it and I'm in a state of shock," Player told the

"I think, what would Ben Hogan have said, you know? What would Byron Nelson have said? If Arnold Palmer saw that today?

"I was disgusted. So to me, the Ryder Cup is in shambles.

"I love the fact that they say 'USA, USA.' I love [how] the British respond in their way. I think that's exciting. But the Ryder Cup to me is the worst event in the world."

Player went on to allude to the classless "F*** you Rory" chant instigated by comedian Heather McMahan, who was hired by the PGA of America as an announcer on the first tee.

To make matters worse, PGA of America president Don Rea kept his head firmly in the sand over the multiple incidents in an on-course interview.

"And to see they hire a lady to stand on the tee - if you want to call her a lady - and saying "F you, Rory. F this European team,'" Player added.

"Are we crazy? And then the head of the PGA says, 'what was so serious about it'?

"Golf has never been that. Golf has been a gentleman's sport. So, and to see that, and to see the players using this 'F' word, I mean, the whole lot."
