Ryder Cup 2025: Teams taking shape ahead of Bethpage battle
Keegan Bradley's victory - at the expense of Tommy Fleetwood - had distinct Ryder Cup vibes in last week's Travelers Championship.
The tournament, which pits Team Great Britain & Ireland against Continental Europe, serves as a Ryder Cup warm-up, echoing the spirit of the Seve Trophy (2000-2013) and the Hero Cup revived in 2023.
The second edition of this event highlights its growing significance in Ryder Cup preparations.
However, headlines have been dominated by reports of Tom McKibbin, the young Northern Irish golfer, potentially joining the LIV Golf League.
McKibbin, who recently secured his PGA Tour card in November through the Race to Dubai Rankings, is rumoured to be signing a lucrative multi-year deal with Jon Rahm's Legion XIII team.
When asked, McKibbin neither confirmed nor denied the speculation, citing respect for key figures such as Justin Rose and Luke Donald as well as the Team Cup's significance.
The timing of McKibbin's reported move coincides with ongoing negotiations between LIV Golf's backers, the Public Investment Fund, and the PGA and DP World Tours.
Such developments threaten to overshadow the Team Cup, raising questions about the future landscape of professional golf.
"Tom has to make the decisions that he feels are best for him. I talked to Tom and he's very much looking forward to this week, looking forward to playing for Justin, looking forward to try and impress me and contribute to the team," said Donald, as quoted by Gulf News.
"Nothing changes there."
Notably, the Team Cup builds on the Hero Cup's success, which prepared players like Sepp Straka, Robert MacIntyre, and Nicolai Højgaard for Ryder Cup roles.
"It's a great week to start the year and I think it's a good way to get their game sharp for the rest of the season to see how the perform under that sort of match play mentality," added Donald.
"There's a different pressure to match play and it's good for me to see how they cope with it."
