Ryder Cup set for fiery showdown in New York with familiar faces on both sides

Europe, with Luke Donald back in charge for a rare second outing, will have all bases covered as the visitors go in search of a first win on American soil since 2012 (a tie would be just fine) while Keegan Bradley is the highly unlikely US skipper. To mix things up the 39-year-old may well end up being a playing skipper.

There will also be a familiar look to both sides, the visitors likely to lean heavily on experience in the hostile backdrop of Bethpage Black while Bradley will be desperate to make it a sixth straight home victory.

Here are all the details that you'll need in the build-up.

When is the 2025 Ryder Cup?

It will take place on Friday 26, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 September which is the same week on the calendar that it's happened in recent years. There will be the usual three days of practice to allow for pairings to acclimatise themselves, photoshoots, team meetings, gala dinners and the opening ceremony. The build-up is generally the longest three days in the sport, followed by the three quickest.

Where is the 2025 Ryder Cup being held?

At Bethpage Black so expect to be bombarded by the sign of the Black Course being extremely difficult and only suitable for highly skilled golfers. It's a public course on Long Island and has hosted the US Open in 2002 and 2009, the PGA Championship in 2019 and The Barclays in 2012 and 2016. It's set to be the rowdiest Ryder Cup ever, which is saying something given what's taken place in the past.

When will the teams be announced?

The top six eligible American players following the BMW Championship on August 17 will qualify for the team. Then Keegan Bradley will fill in the gaps following the conclusion of the Tour Championship the week after. The big question for the hosts is whether Bradley will be a playing captain - the answer to that is very likely yes.

The European team will also comprise six automatic qualifiers on August 24 after the conclusion of the British Masters. Then Donald will add the other half of the side the week commencing September 1.

What is the format?

The information for this is sketchy but it's thought that it will be the same opening round of foursomes, followed by the fourballs. The last time it was the other way round was in Paris seven years ago. Foursomes is when the teams play alternate shots so one player will tee off on the odds and the other the evens before playing the hole alternately.

Then it's the usual 12 singles on Sunday.

Who are the betting favourites?

Despite the collection of European successes on the PGA Tour this term, the Americans are the slight favourites. Much of this will be based on the home team's superiority in recent years. Europe last won away in 2012 – remember Medinah? - while we have to go back to 1993 for an American win on foreign soil.

Since Medinah the margins of victory have been five, six, seven, 10 and five points respectively which gives us some idea of how hard it is to win away.

Who are the vice-captains?

The Europeans have again turned to a wealth of experience with Donald trusting the Molinari brothers, Thomas Bjorn and Jose Maria Olazabal.

It is the American backroom team that is more noteworthy, given that Bradley might well play and have to hand over many of the duties to his five assistants – Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker, Kevin Kisner, Jim Furyk and Gary Woodland. Only Furyk has captained the US side before so he might well play a bigger role than initially anticipated.

What number Ryder Cup is this?

This will be the 45th set of matches – the United States have won 27, Europe (previously GB&I) are now up to 15 with two ties.

Since 1985, the scoreline reads 11-7 to Europe with one tie.

Where are the future Ryder Cups?

The 2027 matches will be played at Adare Manor in County Limerick, followed by Hazeltine National two years later. Now we have had it confirmed that Camiral Resort, better and previously known as PGA Catalunya, will stage the 2031 matches as Spain plays host for the first time since 1997.

Then we're off to the Olympic Club in San Francisco for the 2033 renewal and bizarrely we already know that Congressional will host in 2037.
