Ruan Venter confirms successful knee surgery as Lions star faces lengthy layoff

The 23-year-old, who has already been capped once by the Springboks, revealed on Instagram that an operation to repair his ACL, MCL and meniscus was successfully completed.

"Extremely disappointed to end my season like this. Difficult to understand why but I know that God has a bigger plan.

"Very thankful to have undergone successful surgery and I can't wait to get this journey started. This is only the beginning!"

Venter sustained the injury during the Lions' 31-7 Vodacom United Rugby Championship defeat to Leinster at the Aviva Stadium, leaving the field while clutching his right knee.

The forward has been one of the Lions' most consistent performers this season, producing strong all-round displays at both blindside flank and lock, form that had placed him firmly in the frame for further Springbok honours.

His progress had been building toward a potential recall to the national setup, with the Boks set to begin their season against the Barbarians in Gqeberha on 20 June.
