Achraf Hakimi's PSG heroics snag Ligue 1's top African prize

The Moroccan star outshone Nantes' Moses Simon, Nice's Evann Guessand, and Strasbourg's Habib Diarra to claim the prestigious honor, named after the late Cameroonian midfielder who tragically passed away in 2003.

Hakimi, 26, played a pivotal role as PSG secured their record-extending 13th Ligue 1 title. His contributions also propelled the Parisians to the Champions League final, where they will face Inter Milan on May 31.

The versatile defender sealed his case with a crucial goal in PSG's 2-1 Champions League semifinal victory over Arsenal, showcasing his attacking flair from the right flank.

"I'm honored to receive this award," Hakimi said in a recent statement shared by PSG on X. "It's a testament to the hard work we've put in as a team this season."

This marks the second time a defender has won the award, following Marseille's Chancel Mbemba in 2023. Hakimi also becomes the fourth Moroccan to claim the prize, joining Marouane Chamakh (2009), Younes Belhanda (2012), and Sofiane Boufal (2016). Last year's winner was Marseille's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

PSG are chasing a historic treble, with the Ligue 1 title already secured and finals looming in the Champions League and Coupe de France against Reims. Manager Luis Enrique praised Hakimi's impact, saying on X, "Achraf's energy and quality are unmatched. He's vital to our ambitions."

Meanwhile, PSG's Ousmane Dembele earned Ligue 1 Player of the Year honors. The French forward, thriving in a central role, said at the awards gala, "This position closer to goal has transformed my game. I'm happier and more effective." Dembele's career-best form has been instrumental in PSG's dominant campaign.
