Gary Kirsten abruptly resigned six months into a two-year contract as head coach when Javed took over the reins on a temporary basis.

Hesson enjoyed a fruitful time six years as head coach of New Zealand when he was appointed in 2012, with the Black Caps becoming a force in world cricket including reaching their first World Cup final in 2015 where they lost to Australia.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi said: "I am pleased to announce the appointment of former New Zealand cricketer and renowned coach Mike Hesson as the white-ball head coach of the Pakistan men's team.

"Mike brings with him a wealth of international experience and a proven track record of developing competitive sides. We look forward to his expertise and leadership in shaping the future of Pakistan's white-ball cricket. Welcome to the team, Mike!"

Hesson is currently the coach of Pakistan Super League (PSL) outfit Islamabad United and will start his tenure with the national side at the conclusion of the T20 franchise tournament.

He was appointed director of cricket for IPL side Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2019, before they parting ways in 2023.
