Alphonso Davies keeps Canada waiting as injury return 'unclear' ahead of World Cup

Alphonso Davies keeps Canada waiting as injury return 'unclear' ahead of World Cup

The injured Bayern Munich full-back has joined up with the national team camp and was seen doing light running during Canada's 2-0 friendly win over Uzbekistan in Alberta. While his presence was a positive sign, he made it clear he is not yet ready to return to competitive matches due to a left hamstring injury.

"It feels nice to get back on the pitch and do some running," Davies said. "I'm happy to be home, I'm happy to be with the boys and support them, whether it's just on or off the pitch."

With Canada preparing for their World Cup opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12, Davies stressed patience over predictions, refusing to set a fixed timeline for his comeback.

"We just have to see how everything goes over the next couple days," he said. "I'll just continue my rehab, my progression, and see how I'm feeling, day by day, step by step."

Jesse Marsch also urged caution, making it clear that the staff will not take any risks with the defender's recovery.

"What we don't want to do is put him in a situation to suffer again," Marsch explained. "We're going to make sure as a staff that we monitor him every single day and put him in a position to succeed."

Canada will head into the tournament with Davies as a key figure, but only if fully fit. They are drawn in Group B for the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar, and Switzerland.
