Batting first stand-in skipper Travis Head had won the toss, the Aussies powered to a total of 182-6 with Marcus Stoinis top-scoring with 45 from 29 balls.

Opener Josh Inglis gave the innings a rapid start with 37 from 17 deliveries while Matt Renshaw was measured for his 37 off 33 balls.

The Irish suffered a huge blow in the run-chase when skipper Paul Stirling retired hurt in the first over.

Nathan Ellis was then the pick of the Australian bowlers with the seamer returning figures of 4-12 in his overs.

Spinner Adam Zampa was equally effective with 4-24 as Ireland were bundled out 115 in 16.5 overs for their second defeat of the global tournament.

Australia lost Marsh to a groin injury just minutes before the toss with veteran Steve Smith to set to Colombo as cover.

"He (Marsh) is experiencing ongoing pain and discomfort which is restricting his movement," a Cricket Australia statement said.

"Scans have confirmed internal testicular bleeding, and he will require a period of rest and rehabilitation. His return to play will be guided by symptom resolution and medical advice.

"Standby player Steven Smith will travel to Sri Lanka as cover to acclimatise and prepare, should he be required."

Smith last represented Australia in the shortest format in February 2024 but looked was in good form in Big Bash League playing for the Sydney Sixers.

The 36-year-old plundered 299 runs at 59.80 and a strike-rate of 167.97 in six innings in the franchise tournament.
