Australia set to call on superstar Ellyse Perry despite fitness for Women's T20 World Cup Final

Australia set to call on superstar Ellyse Perry despite fitness for Women's T20 World Cup Final

The 35-year-old is perhaps the most decorated cricketer - male or female - of all-time, with eight World Cup titles spread over the two white ball formats.

However, Perry hobbled off the park retired hurt after just two runs in Tuesday's semifinal victory over the West Indies, citing 'minor quad awareness'. Make of that what you will.

Such is the star-power of the Australia Women side that they need not fully rely on Perry to get them over the line against England at Lord's on Sunday, but a final is a final, and she remains an integral part of the setup.

If you were in doubt, Perry is Australia's leading run-scorer at the 2026 tournament with 185 runs at 46.25 and a healthy strike rate of 135.03. She's picked up four wickets as well.

Head coach Shelley Nitschke hinted that they may pick her even if she is not fully fit.

"Yeah, potentially," Nitschke told ESPN.

"I think there's still certain things that she wants to be able to do as well, [to] be able to still contribute to the team and hold her own, whether that's in the field or running between the wickets.

"But there is that element of, this is a World Cup final, so what's our tolerance there? So certainly a slightly different lens than perhaps some other times."

The stalwart has been through a similar situation before, one she hopes doesn't repeat itself. Perry was forced to miss the 2020 T20 World Cup final at the MCG after badly injuring her hamstring.
